Trump’s Trade War Sparks Full-Blown Crisis for American Farmers

Apr 28, 2025

Donald Trump once promised to “stand with America’s farmers.” Today, they’re standing alone and falling under the weight of Trump issuing the largest tax hike in four decades and waging a trade war that dried up export markets for the agricultural community.

According to U.S. exporters, Trump’s reckless trade war has triggered a full-blown crisis in the agriculture sector. Skyrocketing retaliatory tariffs have placed a large obstacle to international trade, slamming the door shut on key export markets and devastating farmers’ bottom lines. Soybean, pork, and grain producers are seeing their livelihoods dry up, with no end in sight.

At a time when farmers need backup the most, Trump is gutting the very programs meant to help them. Massive cuts to the Department of Agriculture’s services have left rural communities without critical support for conservation, farm loans, and disaster assistance, turning an economic disaster into a full-scale collapse.

“Trump promised to fight for America’s farmers, but instead, he launched a trade war that’s crushing them and gutted the very safety nets they rely on,” said American Bridge 21st Century spokesperson Brandon Weathersby. “He’s not focused on helping farmers, workers, or their families – he’s never been on their side. Instead of fighting for rural America, Trump’s policies are pushing family farms toward extinction. Rural America deserves better than being collateral damage in Trump’s economic chaos.”
