Sen. Ayotte Tries To Spin Vote Ensuring Terrorist Suspects Can Keep Buying Guns

Dec 08, 2015

Senator Kelly Ayotte last week voted against a measure to close a loophole that allows persons on the terror watch list to purchase guns. On Sunday, Senator Ayotte tried to spin her vote with a tweet downplaying her NRA-pander that leaves Americans vulnerable: “We need to come together now & pass law 2 stop those on no-fly list from buying guns, w/ due process for Americans who are wrongfully on list.”

That sounds nice, but here’s the thing: it doesn’t mean much of anything.

“An empty sentiment expressed in 140 characters doesn’t change the fact that Senator Kelly Ayotte voted to leave individuals on the federal terrorist watch list unrestricted in their ability to purchase firearms. Eighty-nine percent of Granite Staters support background checks for all gun purchases, so it’s no surprise that Senator Ayotte’s trying to downplay her subservience to the NRA and mislead New Hampshire voters — but it’s how she voted that really matters,” said American Bridge 21st Century President Jessica Mackler. “Senator Ayotte pledged to the NRA that she’d oppose any such ownership restrictions on terrorist watch list members during her last election, and she’s benefited from over $52,000 in gun rights group spending since 2009. Senator Ayotte kept her promise, casting her lot with a GOP contingency that’s blocking a common-sense national security measure to make sure the NRA cash keeps rolling in. Plain and simple: Senator Kelly Ayotte is bought and paid for by the NRA.”
