Shot:

During today’s Senate confirmation hearing, Sen. Markwayne Mullin refused to say he wouldn’t deploy federal agents to polling locations this fall if confirmed to lead the Department of Homeland Security.

Chaser:

Less than a year ago, Sen. Mullin came out in support of “security” for elections:

“As I said, we can’t fix the 2020 election. It’s— the idea is preventing something like that from ever happening again. That’s what, that’s our number one goal here. What we, we can’t fix the problem if we can’t fully identify it. And I think we can all agree there was a problem. So it’s up on, it’s, it’s incumbent on us to prevent it from moving forward. And, and it’s, and I agree we, I don’t want to federalize the elections. Absolutely the worst thing we want to do is federalize elections because, God forbid, Democrats get in control again, and they will turn all of our states this way. And so we need to keep state laws and allow states to build, to set their elections. That’s the way that our founding fathers wanted it to be. But we need to have some security put in place that, that will make sure that people know that our elections are secure.
