Jeff Sessions is in trouble – deep trouble. According to The Washington Post, then-Senator Jeff Sessions spoke twice last year with Russian Ambassador Sergey Kislyak, considered by U.S. intelligence to be one of Russia’s top spies. However, during his confirmation hearings, Sessions stated “I did not have communications with the Russians.”
But he did. That’s perjury. Committing perjury under oath is serious – just ask 1999 Jeff Sessions.
It is clear that Sessions must recuse himself from any investigation into Donald Trump’s connections to Russia.
Take a look at the growing list of Republicans calling for Sessions to recuse himself:
NEW Senator Rob Portman: “I think it would be best for him and for the country to recuse himself from the DOJ Russia probe.”
NEW Senator Jeff Flake: “Obviously he is going to need to clarify and likely recuse himself from any investigation with regard to the Russians.”
NEW Rep. Patrick Meehan: “Americans must have confidence in integrity of inquiries into Russian activities and Sessions’ involvement would undermine this confidence”
NEW Rep. Darrell Issa: You’re going to need to use the special prosecutor’s statute and office not just to recuse, you can’t just give it to your deputy—that’s another political appointee—you do have to do that.”
Senator Lindsey Graham: If there is something there and it goes up the chain of investigation, it is clear to me that Jeff Sessions, who is my dear friend, cannot make this decision about Trump.” […] “If there is something there that the FBI believes is criminal in nature then for sure you need a special prosecutor. If that day ever comes, I’ll be the first one to say it needs to be someone other than Jeff.”
Rep. Kevin McCarthy: “I think for the trust of the American people, he should recuse himself.”
Rep. Jason Chaffetz: “AG Sessions should clarify his testimony and recuse himself”
Rep. Justin Amash: “AG Sessions must recuse himself from the Russia investigation.”
Rep. Raul Labrador: “But that was the question, you answer the question that you’re asked. You don’t caveat with you know twenty other things, but that’s why I think he should recuse himself.”
Rep. Leonard Lance: “Attorney General Sessions must recuse himself from any investigation into potential contacts between Trump presidential campaign allies and Moscow. And Attorney General Sessions must, at the very least, clarify his testimony before the Senate Judiciary Committee immediately.”
