New analysis of Trump’s big, dangerous bill from the Urban Institute reveals Trump’s true intentions to betray the working class and take away health care from Americans who worked or attended school just months before applying for assistance.
Trump’s agenda imposes cumbersome paperwork requirements for potential beneficiaries before enrolling in Medicaid.
According to the Urban Institute study, although 69% of Medicaid expansion enrollees without dependents worked or attended school while enrolled in Medicaid, about one in three who worked or attended school would not have met the work requirement in one or more months because of unstable employment.
The Institute also found 84% of adults worked or attended school at some point during the six months before enrolling in Medicaid; however, only 71% would have met the work requirement in the month before applying. Additionally, if states require applicants to demonstrate participation in work activities for six months before applying, only 64% would be compliant in each of those months.
Despite Trump’s lies characterizing Medicaid recipients as freeloaders, the Urban Institute found that many enrollees with unstable employment were in poor health, had irregular work schedules, experienced job loss or worked part-time involuntarily, or lived with disabled household members.
“Trump and Republicans aren’t trying to take health care options away from people who refuse to work, they’re planning to rip the rug out from under Americans who do,” said American Bridge 21st Century spokesman Brandon Weathersby. “This is a health care agenda that punishes people for being poor, being sick, or just being in between jobs. This isn’t what working-class households were promised. The voters have been double-crossed and now their health care access is being sacrificed to pass tax cuts for millionaires and billionaires.”
