As the nation marks the 53rd anniversary of Roe v. Wade, the consequences of Donald Trump nominating the justices who overturned the right to an abortion mean women now face life-threatening situations because of policies that restrict access to reproductive health care.
Recent reporting and research show the most dire outcomes:
- Rising maternal deaths in states with abortion bans, as women are forced to carry medically dangerous pregnancies.
- Prosecutions of women for pregnancy-related complications, with over 400 cases filed in states with strict abortion restrictions.
- Denied or delayed miscarriage care, putting women’s lives at risk in situations that would have been treatable under Roe-era protections.
Trump remains the face of the anti-abortion movement in America today. His Health and Human Services secretary, RFK Jr., has cited a flawed study to publicly suggest further restrictions on mifepristone, a safe and essential medication used by millions of women to end early pregnancies, threatening access to life-saving care.
“Trump isn’t focused on making health care affordable or accessible for women or their families. He celebrated the fall of Roe and created chaos in the states that put women’s health at risk. Now he’s letting his administration cast doubt on essential reproductive health resources while refusing to address skyrocketing costs that have doubled families’ premiums,” said American Bridge 21st Century spokesperson Brandon Weathersby. “Trump and the Republican Party cannot be trusted to make health care affordable or protect the American people. They’re not champions of health care, they’re destroying access and turning care into a luxury only the very richest can afford.”
