Following tonight’s election results in the Florida primary, American Bridge spokesperson Drew Godinich released the following statement:
“There’s no question that Ron DeSantis is a failed, autocratic leader who has made Floridians’ lives more expensive and difficult. From enacting an extreme abortion ban with no exceptions for rape or incest, to raising taxes on tens of thousands of Floridians over a political battle with Disney, to pushing housing costs out of reach for millions, DeSantis has proven himself to be an enemy to middle-class families and values. He’s out for one person — himself.”
Under his watch:
- Florida has become the most expensive place to live in America, where housing prices have far outpaced the national average. Renters and homeowners alike can ill afford to live in Ron DeSantis’ Florida, but instead of focusing on rising costs, DeSantis is focused on fights to burnish his image ahead of a presidential run.
- DeSantis’ signature legislative accomplishment, his abortion ban, seeks to criminalize all abortions after 15 weeks – even in cases of rape or incest.
- Florida ranked in the bottom half on a list of “Best States for Workers”
- DeSantis has waged a culture war, passing an unpopular and discriminatory “Don’t Say Gay” law to stifle teachers in classrooms, stripping medical care from LGBTQ adults and forcing the outing of LGBTQ kids in schools.
Following Disney’s decision to stand up for its LGBTQ employees, DeSantis waged a war against the iconic American company, including forcing a bill through the legislature to strip it of its special tax status in Florida. As a result, tens of thousands of Florida residents will face a tax hike of nearly $1 billion — with no reprieve in sight.
