On This Day in 2017: Donald Trump Pulled out of the Paris Climate Accord

Jun 01, 2023

On June 1, 2017, former President Donald Trump pulled the United States out of the Paris Climate Accord – abdicating American leadership on the fight against climate change.

When he was president, Trump did everything in his power to reverse course on climate progress. In addition to breaking international agreements on climate, he rolled back environmental protections, weakened emissions standards, boosted production of fossil fuels, and banned the term climate change while trafficking in conspiracy theories about renewable energy.

“Six years ago today, Trump embarrassed America on the global stage — as he did nearly daily — by pulling out of the Paris Climate Accord,” said Grace Hagerty, spokesperson for American Bridge. “We can’t go backwards to a presidency characterized by daily disasters and self-imposed crises. We certainly cannot go back to having any Republican, including Trump, in the White House who doesn’t believe in climate change. The stakes are too high for our kids and our grandkids; not just here, but across the world.”

American Bridge has been holding Donald Trump accountable every step of the way on his disastrous climate record. Read more about it in the Trump Research Book.
