This evening, Donald Trump is set to speak to members of the Libertarian Party at their annual convention. Trump may feel at home in a room full of right-wing extremists, but the truth is Libertarians hated his policies while he was in office.
The Libertarian Party called Trump “the opposite of a Libertarian” during his four years in the White House. Party leaders criticized several parts of his record from his ineffective border wall to his inept response to COVID-19.
Take a look at all the criticism Libertarians have for Donald Trump:
- The Libertarian Party concluded that “Donald Trump is the opposite of a Libertarian” after he abandoned his campaign promises to reduce spending, taxes, and defense spending.
- Trump was ripped by the Libertarian Party for actions they perceived as pushing the limits of his executive authority, claiming, “the office of the President does not come with a crown.”
- The Libertarian Party criticized Trump for increasing spending by half a trillion dollars while hiking tariffs.
- Trump’s foreign policy doctrine was called out by the Libertarian Party as “deepening our involvement in the Middle East” and “catering to the defense contractors.”
- Trump’s government shutdown to force Congress to fund his border wall pet project was called an “extreme and unprecedented power grab” by the Libertarian Party.
- During the early weeks of the COVID-19 pandemic, the Libertarian Party blamed the Trump’s administration for the lack of COVID tests, writing, “Open up the medical market. Every American would have access to COVID-19 testing today if the FDA and CDC hadn’t throttled development.”
- The Trump administration’s decision to announce a national ban on flavored e-cigarette products was called “immoral” by the Libertarian Party.
