John James Votes For Higher Premiums For Nearly Half A Million Michiganders

Jan 08, 2026

John James, once again, sides with Washington Republicans over Michigan families, voting against a bipartisan extension of the Affordable Care Act’s enhanced premium tax credits. This vote directly blocks assistance that working families rely on to afford health insurance coverage.

James’s opposition threatens to drive up premiums for nearly 500,000 Michiganders who purchase coverage through the ACA marketplace, forcing families, seniors, and small business owners to pay hundreds or even thousands of dollars more each year just to keep their health insurance.

“With this vote, John James chose party politics over the health and financial security of Michigan families,” said Tiffiany Vaughn, spokesperson for American Bridge 21st Century. “At a time when health care costs are already straining household budgets, James voted to raise premiums and put coverage further out of reach for working Michiganders.”

James’ vote aligns with his broader record opposing Affordable Care Act protections and backing Republican plans to roll back subsidies that make coverage affordable. In public remarks, James has praised GOP proposals that would eliminate ACA premium tax credits.

  • John James called the Affordable Care Act a “monstrosity that hurts businesses and hurts the middle class.”

John James isn’t offering solutions to make health care more affordable; he’s voting to make it more expensive and less accessible. A politician who can’t show up to answer voters’ questions, and repeatedly votes against affordable health care for Michiganders shouldn’t be asking voters for a promotion.
