Joe Heck Criticizes Birthright Citizenship, Wouldn't Be American Without It

Jan 14, 2016

Jumping on the Trump train, Nevada Senate candidate Joe Heck has criticized birthright citizenship saying, “I think [changing birthright citizenship] needs to be part of the discussion.” But in 2010, he admitted he wouldn’t be a U.S. citizen without it.

According to KNPR:

Heck: Well, the fact is, and I can say this being the grandson of someone who became a citizen through birthright citizenship. My grandfather’s family was on vacation here when he was born. And the week after he was born, they moved back to Italy, and ultimately when he emigrated to the United States, he was able to because he had birthright citizenship.

Heck wants to consider a change to the 14th amendment, but he might not have been elected without it. Hypocritical much?

Heck On Birthright Citizenship

Heck’s Repeated Attacks On Birthright Citizenship

2015: Heck Said Immigrants Created A “Pregnancy Industry” In The United States
September 2015 AUDIO: Heck Said Immigrants Had Created A “Pregnancy Industry” In The United States. According to a video posted by the Nevada State Democratic Party, “HECK: there’s been a lot of debate, over whether or not the interpretation of the 14th amendment by the Supreme Court that stated anybody born in the United States is automatically a citizen. There’s been a lot of discussion as to whether that could be changed simply by a law. Right? Because it’s a Supreme Court interpretation of the Constitution, on that Constitutional amendment. And so there are folks, much smarter than I am, on Constitutional law, that are looking at that issue. QUESTIONER: Well, do you support that or not? HECK: “Well, I think the issue is, that, the pregnancy industry that we’ve seen, where there are folks that are coming – that are specifically coming from foreign countries – not an immigrant who’s coming to America to try to stay here – but somebody’s who’s coming solely for the purpose of having a baby, and then within two, three weeks, going back to their home country, that’s what we’ve gotta go after. That’s an illicit business that’s capitalizing on American generosity. And that’s where we’ve got to concentrate our efforts, I believe.” [YouTube Video – Nevada State Democratic Party, 9/22/15]

2015: Heck Attacked Immigrants For Creating An “Illicit” Industry Of Immigrant Pregnancies In The United States That Was “Capitalizing On American Generosity”

September 2015 AUDIO: Heck Said Immigrants Had Started An “Illicit Business” Of Immigrant Pregnancies In The United States. According to “HECK: there’s been a lot of debate, over whether or not the interpretation of the 14th amendment by the Supreme Court that stated anybody born in the United States is automatically a citizen. 2010: Heck Said Immigrants Created A “Pregnancy Industry” In The United States

2010 AUDIO: Heck Said The US Had To Confront The “Problem” Of Immigrants Willfully Coming To The Country To “Deliver A Child To Gain Citizenship.” In an interview on KNPR: “HECK: Well, the fact is, and I can say this being the grandson of someone who became a citizen through birthright citizenship. My grandfather’s family was on vacation here when he was born. And the week after he was born, they moved back to Italy, and ultimately when he emigrated to the United States, he was able to because he had birthright citizenship. So it’s not an issue that’s foreign to me. But I think when you look at how that’s being utilized, and we see it happening along the southern border, where individuals are coming across the border specifically to deliver their child, to get birthright citizenship. And I think that poses a problem for us here in the United States when that’s the prime purpose of – it’s not like you were here for another event, for another occasion and happened to deliver a baby here. This is willful coming across the border to deliver a child to gain citizenship. HOST: But how many times does that happen? I mean, how many children were born like that each year, where someone slips over the border – maybe to Tuscon or Calexico, or to San Diego, and takes advantage of that. How often does that really happen? HECK: I think if you really look at every child that’s here that has birthright citizenship, that’s what’s happened. They’ve come across the border. Even if they had been here – perhaps up to a year, illegally working, and then had a child while here, that’s still the same ultimate process.” [KNPR, 5/20/10]

Hateful “Anchor Babies” Rhetoric

Heck Endorsed The Debate Revoking Birthright Citizenship Of “Anchor Babies”

National Journal: In Congress, Heck Endorsed The Debate Over Revoking Birthright Citizenship Of “Anchor Babies.” According to the National Journal, “And although Heck tried to introduce his own version of the Dream Act—which would make such children eligible for U.S. citizenship if they earned a college degree or served in the military—he has also endorsed a debate over revoking birthright citizenship of ‘anchor babies.’” [National Journal, 7/6/15]

[SPANISH LANGUAGE] September 2015 Telemundo Las Vegas: Heck Believed That The Term “Anchor Baby” Should Be A Part Of The Immigration Debate. [Telemundo Las Vegas, 9/2/15]
