Johnson’s last-minute changes to the 2017 GOP tax law saved some of his biggest billionaire backers hundreds of millions in tax breaks. He needs to disclose how much he saved himself.
In the interest of honesty and transparency, Ron Johnson needs to disclose how much he slashed his own taxes during the 2017 GOP tax law debate.
Johnson recently admitted that his 2017 efforts to demand changes to the GOP tax law secured tax breaks for himself as well as his “donors’ businesses.”
Indeed, via ProPublica reporting from last year, it was revealed that Johnson’s push for changes to the law “result[ed] in hundreds of millions of dollars in deductions to megadonors who funded his campaigns” — including the billionaire Johnson backers Dick Uihlein and Diane Hendricks.
But Johnson has yet to disclose how much he personally benefited from those bill changes he aggressively pushed to reduce his own tax rate.
Despite a long record of lying and spreading misinformation (especially on COVID), Johnson has recently claimed a commitment to providing “detailed facts to cut through the political rhetoric and arm people with real information.”
Here’s an idea: Johnson can start by disclosing how much he personally benefited from the changes he negotiated to the 2017 GOP tax law.
While he’s at it, Johnson can further explain how he managed to get away with paying just $2,105 in state income tax in 2017, despite earning at least $450,000 in income.
