How Does Ryan Still Support Trump After He Denigrated Gold Star Family?

Aug 01, 2016

Somehow, Speaker Paul Ryan is still supporting Donald Trump after Trump lashed out at Gold Star parents for honoring their son who was killed in Iraq by a suicide bomber.

Trump this Sunday displayed his indignant and reactive temperament by questioning Khizr and Ghazala Khan, who spoke at the DNC convention on behalf of their son killed in 2004. The Khans made an impassioned case against Trump for hoping to ban people from the U.S. on the basis of their religion, as well opposing Trump for vilifying people like their son from serving in the U.S. military based on their religion.

Speaker Ryan claims to believe Trump’s Muslim ban “is not reflective of” American values and says that Khzir and Ghazala Khan and their son “should always be honored. Period.” But despite this, Ryan doesn’t even mention Trump in his statement, Ryan’s still backing Trump and remains committed to getting Trump in the White House.

Paul Ryan has lost all credibility. Ryan’s craven refusal to denounce Trump for attacking a Gold Star family — not to mention his larger endorsement of Trump’s hate-fueled campaign — definitively exposes his political cowardice and lack of principle.

“What will it take for Speaker Ryan to categorically cut ties with Trump and his dangerous breed of nationalism?” asked Jessica Mackler, president of American Bridge. “Trump’s disregard for our soldiers’ sacrifices is even more evidence that he is fundamentally unfit to be Commander-in-Chief.”
