Americans still aren’t buying Donald Trump’s spin on tariffs, rising costs, or his economic agenda. The latest Survey of Consumers from the University of Michigan found consumer sentiment remains well below the post-election bounce seen last December.
The survey concluded that “consumers are unlikely to regain their confidence in the economy unless they feel assured that inflation is unlikely to worsen,” and that inflation expectations “remain above December 2024, indicating that consumers still perceive substantial risk that inflation will increase in the future.”
Americans have every right to worry about the inflationary impacts of Trump’s unnecessary trade war; inflation spiked 2.7% in June, according to the latest data.
“Trump can yell fake news, spin lies, and deny the data, but American families aren’t dumb. They know their dollars aren’t going as far as they used to, and they’re seeing the price of groceries, gas, and rent soar as Trump brags about trade deals that never materialize,” said American Bridge 21st Century spokesperson Brandon Weathersby. “People know they’re being lied to. That’s why Trump’s approval numbers are crashing and why voters will make the entire Republican Party pay at the voting booth.”
