At the start of August recess, Speaker Mike Johnson boldly declared that Republicans would go back to their districts and “tell the truth” about the wildly unpopular Big Ugly Law. Turns out, selling a flaming pile of garbage isn’t as easy as it sounds.
“Republicans thought they could slap a bow on a dumpster fire and call it a win, but voters aren’t buying the Big Ugly Law,” said American Bridge 21st Century spokesperson Nico Delgado. “They’re furious they’re footing the bill for Trump’s tariffs while losing health care and access to critical programs. Republicans tried to spin their August as a victory lap. Instead, it’s looking more like a funeral procession for their 2026 hopes.”
American Bridge has been tracking GOP town halls, district visits, and public events all over the country since before the recess began, and what we found is brutal. In red states and swing districts alike, Republicans are getting scorched by furious constituents demanding answers on devastating cuts to Medicare, Medicaid, and food assistance – all while Trump’s reckless tariffs, enabled by congressional Republicans, are driving up prices on everything from groceries to farm equipment.
Even in deep-red strongholds like Wyoming, Oklahoma, and Alabama, voters are making clear that they’re sick of paying more so that Trump’s billionaire buddies can get another tax break. The Republican agenda is unraveling, and the backlash is growing.
Today, American Bridge released a new video highlighting town hall chaos from across the country, putting a spotlight on Republican lawmakers getting hammered by their own constituents for rubber-stamping Trump’s economic disaster.
