American Bridge 21st Century Co-Chair Cecile Richards Statement on NC GOP’s Abortion Ban Vote

May 16, 2023

Today, North Carolina state legislators will vote on either upholding Governor Cooper’s veto of a highly restrictive abortion ban bill or override the veto and force the abortion ban into state law.

In response, American Bridge 21st Century Co-Chair Cecile Richards released the following statement:

“The Republican Party has made ending access to safe and legal abortion their number one priority, and the women of North Carolina are their latest target. An overwhelming majority of Americans want abortion to be left up to a pregnant person and their doctor, yet Republicans in the state legislature have proven they will not stop until that fundamental right is stripped from North Carolinian women.

“If the Republican Party is successful today this could just be the start. The GOP’s top choice for governor, Mark Robinson, has vowed that, if elected, he will try to ban all abortions in the state with absolutely no exceptions.

“I implore Reps. John Bradford, Ted Davis Jr., Tricia Cotham, Sen. Michael V Lee, and the rest of the Republican legislators to do the right thing, listen to what their constituents really want, and vote against overriding the governor’s veto to stop this cruel ban in its tracks.”
