AB21 Leadership Applauds President Biden and Democrats for Championing, Passing, and Signing the Inflation Reduction Act

Aug 16, 2022

Today, President Biden signed the Inflation Reduction Act. Thanks to Democratic leadership in Washington, Americans are getting necessary economic relief. This law delivers for Americans by lowering the cost of prescription drugs and everyday energy costs, reducing the deficit, and ensuring the wealthiest corporations finally pay their fair share. It also takes the most aggressive action in history to combat the existential crisis of climate change. It strengthens our energy security, creating jobs manufacturing solar panels, wind turbines, and electric vehicles in America with American workers. This historic legislation passed with no Republican support at all.

In response to the passage of this legislation, American Bridge Co-Chairs Gov. Steve Bullock, Gov. Deval Patrick, Sec. Tom Perez, and former Planned Parenthood President Cecile Richards have released the following statements.

“President Biden’s legislative agenda has consistently delivered for Americans all over this country,” said Governor Steve Bullock. “Most recently, the Inflation Reduction Act has united our party and the results will be life-changing for millions of families. Not only does the Inflation Reduction Act lower costs for prescription drugs and keep important health care subsidies in place – it lowers energy costs for Americans while aggressively combating climate change. Today is a tremendous day to be a Democrat and we know that this momentum will carry us into November.”

“It is more and more clear that in Congress, Democrats are the only ones working to help working families,” said Gov. Deval Patrick. “In the last few weeks alone, Democrats have acted to lower prescription drug and gas prices, protect reproductive freedom and veterans health, create good-paying jobs that last, and combat climate change. And they pay for it responsibly by making the most profitable corporations pay their fair share, just like other industrial countries do, instead of hiding the gains in offshore tax havens. Republicans opposed every single one of these measures, without offering a single alternative. I’ve always believed no one party has a corner on all the best ideas, but these days the only ideas out there to help anybody come from Democrats.”

“When President Biden took office, he inherited a massive set of challenges caused by COVID-19 and the previous administration. Throughout his term in office, he has taken swift and direct action – delivering for the American people with a legislative agenda that has made it possible for people to get back on their feet fast,” said Sec. Tom Perez. “Today, by signing the Inflation Reduction Act, President Biden shows that he is tackling the toughest challenges Americans face head on. Cutting costs, creating jobs, and fighting climate change are at the center of the Inflation Reduction Act. While provisions in this bill are popular and will deliver for working people, Republicans have opposed it every step of the way. They are turning their backs on families in favor of the corporate special interests that fund their campaigns.”

“Today represents a huge victory for American families. Democrats passed the Inflation Reduction Act in order to lower prescription drug costs, drive down energy costs, create good-paying jobs in America, and combat climate change,” said Cecile Richards. “Republicans not only voted against this progress – instead they are focused on passing extreme abortion bans, voting against interracial marriage and same-sex marriage equality, pushing the Big Lie, siding with the insurrectionists who attacked our Capitol, voting against lower gas prices, voting against funding for baby formula. Voters will hold them accountable this November.”
