11 States Warn Trump’s Shutdown Will Cost Millions Their SNAP Benefits

Oct 23, 2025

Several states are warning that Trump’s refusal to negotiate on reopening the government is putting critical food assistance at risk for millions of households.

In New York, nearly 3 million residents will lose access to SNAP benefits if the shutdown continues into the next month.

In New Jersey, nearly 1 million residents won’t get their full food assistance benefits next month if the shutdown isn’t resolved.

In Pennsylvania, nearly 2 million residents will have to find another way to put food on the table for their families if Republicans don’t end the shutdown.

In Texas, 3.5 million people will struggle to afford food after losing their benefits due to the Republican shutdown.

In Illinois, 2 million people are bracing to lose their food assistance benefits next week if Trump’s government shutdown continues.

In California, 5.5 million people won’t get their November food assistance benefits if Trump refuses to negotiate.

In Minnesota, more than 440,000 people will lose their access to affordable and healthy food when their benefits are withheld by the Trump administration next month.

In Wisconsin, the government announced that food assistance funding will run out in the next week for nearly 700,000 people who rely on those benefits to put food on the table.

In Colorado, next month’s SNAP benefits are already on hold for the more than 600,000 residents who need them the most.

In Oregon, more than 750,000 people will lose their food assistance benefits for November.

In Montana, more than 77,000 people will lose their November food assistance.

“This is what Trump and Republicans are willing to do to score political points and fund tax breaks for billionaires: take meals out of the mouths of children. Millions of families are losing food they desperately need while this administration ignores the real consequences of its cruelty,” said American Bridge 21st Century spokesperson Brandon Weathersby. “Trump should be working to end the shutdown, keeping food on people’s plates, and keeping his promise to support working class families. Instead, he is tearing down the East Wing and planning a trip to Asia while Americans suffer. Voters will not forget this Republican betrayal of the working class.”
