Donald Trump just proved he’s the real deal — and that’s bad news for the Republican establishment. The GOP’s big donors and establishment types have for months been in denial about the base’s very-real enthusiasm for Trump, insisting that he’d never be able to turn out his voters and pull of a win.
Tonight brings real votes, not just polling numbers, officially confirming that the GOP is the Party of Trump. Xenophobic, anti-immigrant and anti-Muslim rhetoric and policies are what got Trump the win tonight — and they define what the Republican Party has now officially become.
Here’s what Trump’s win stands for — it’s a GOP commitment to:
- Xenophobic fearmongering;
- Hawkish and amateurish foreign policy;
- Hardline opposition to a pathway to citizenship;
- Tax plans that disproportionately boost the top 1%;
- Climate change denial;
- Anti-choice opposition to funding women’s health programs; and,
- Refusals to give hardworking Americans a raise.
In sum, tonight’s Trump win proves that the GOP base is all-in for Trump — and that the establishment can’t do anything about it. And tonight also makes it clear that the GOP is as extreme as ever, and remains committed to the same exclusionary, bigoted, anti-women, anti-science, and anti-working families policies that will continue to lose it elections.
