Now, after Trump’s racist attacks on Judge Gonzalo Curiel, Kirk says Trump lacks “the temperament” to be commander in chief. Kirk is absolutely right, but here’s what he didn’t find disqualifying:
- Trump joking about having called women “fat pigs”
- Trump calling for a ban on Muslims entering the U.S.
- Trump calling immigrants “rapists” who are “bringing drugs” and “crime”
- Trump mocking a reporter with a disability
- Trump insulting Sen. John McCain and American prisoners of war
- Trump pledging to bring back waterboarding and “a hell of a lot worse” torture
- Trump joking he could shoot someone “in the middle of 5th Avenue” and not lose support
- Trump doing a racist impression of Chinese negotiators
Senator Kirk is no stranger to controversial rhetoric himself. He’s said that “the black community” is “the one we drive faster through.“ And Kirk famously joked that Lindsey Graham was a “bro with no ho” — so Kirk’s himself dabbled in misogynistic rhetoric.
This disavowal is too little, too late for Mark Kirk. He put up with Trump for 12 months of racism, xenophobia, misogyny, and dangerous foreign policy ideas. He deserves to have him on top his ticket.
