Mark Kirk Enabled Trump's Xenophobia, Misogyny, And Racism For 12 Months

Jun 07, 2016

Though Donald Trump will still be on top his ticket this fall, Senator Mark Kirk has reversed course on supporting Trump, saying he “cannot and will not support” Trump.

Life comes at you fast.

In May, Kirk called Trump “a net benefit” for his campaign. And until this afternoon, Kirk had repeatedly insisted he’d back Trump.

Now, after Trump’s racist attacks on Judge Gonzalo Curiel, Kirk says Trump lacks “the temperament” to be commander in chief. Kirk is absolutely right, but here’s what he didn’t find disqualifying:

Senator Kirk is no stranger to controversial rhetoric himself. He’s said that “the black community” is “the one we drive faster through.“ And Kirk famously joked that Lindsey Graham was a “bro with no ho” — so Kirk’s himself dabbled in misogynistic rhetoric.

This disavowal is too little, too late for Mark Kirk. He put up with Trump for 12 months of racism, xenophobia, misogyny, and dangerous foreign policy ideas. He deserves to have him on top his ticket.
