American Bridge Releases Memo on Heller's Risky Record on Abortion

Jan 30, 2018

Senator Dean Heller will have the chance to vote on a 20-week abortion ban bill tonight for the second time since he’s been in the U.S. Senate — and he is widely expected to vote for this irresponsible bill. Ahead of tonight’s vote, American Bridge released a memo detailing Sen. Heller’s record on this attack on women’s health care and why it’s a threat to Nevada women.

When similarly irresponsible legislation came up in 2015, Heller voted for a nationwide ban on abortions after 20 weeks, even when the mother’s health is in danger. The bill is dangerous because it could force women to continue a pregnancy at the expense of their own health — and potentially even their lives.

That bill, like the bill Heller will vote for tonight, would actually criminalize doctors who perform abortion after 20 weeks.

That’s why the American Medical Association, and the American Congress of Obstetricians and Gynecologists both strongly oppose tonight’s bill.

“Dean Heller’s dangerous record of siding against women’s health care will be on display tonight as he votes for an irresponsible ban on a woman’s right to choose,” said American Bridge spokesperson Allison Teixeira Sulier. Tonight, Nevada women — and voters across the Silver State — will see Dean Heller put his partisan, ideological agenda above their health, and they will hold him accountable at the ballot box this year.”
