New reporting from Politico revealed the Trump administration delayed and redacted a government report forecasting an increase in the nation’s trade deficit in farm goods. The latest analysis revises the deficit projection to a record $49.5 billion.
The Trump administration is desperate to put a positive spin on its economic failures, but farmers are already feeling the pain of Trump’s reckless policies.
Farmers in places like North Carolina and Iowa are fed up with the uncertainty brought on by Trump’s trade war. Others are concerned they won’t be reimbursed for contracts with the Department of Agriculture and that deep cuts to farming programs will hurt their business.
The Trump administration’s tariffs, grant freezes, U.S. Department of Agriculture cuts, and a looming $300 million cut to food assistance create a perfect storm of uncertainty, fear, and anxiety for America’s food growers.
“You can redact and delay words on a page, but you can’t hide reality from farmers and the rural communities doing their best to stay afloat in Trump’s terrible economy,” said American Bridge 21st Century spokesperson Brandon Weathersby. “It’s not just farmers taking it on the chin; the truth is that every day, millions of American families are living with the consequences of this administration’s failure to live up to its promises.”
