Thom Tillis has seen the damage. He’s heard from Tar Heel State farmers teetering on the edge of bankruptcy. He’s admitted the Trump tariffs were “unacceptable.” And yet, he’s still rolling over for Donald Trump while North Carolina takes the hit.
Trump’s latest recommendation of 50 percent flat tariffs on the European Union will crush even more North Carolina farms, jobs, and small businesses, and Tillis? He’s doing what he always does: Nothing.
“Tillis talks a big game, but when Trump wrecks North Carolina’s economy, he just shrugs and watches it burn,” said American Bridge 21st Century spokesperson Nico Delgado. “He knows these reckless tariffs are killing jobs, increasing prices, bankrupting farmers, and gutting rural towns, but he’d rather suck up to Trump than stand up for the people who elected him – and voters won’t forget.”
Let’s not forget what Tillis has said:
- Tillis acknowledged that Trump was destroying the economy and said: “You can’t look at this today and recognize it for anything other than being unacceptable.”
- Tillis admitted that farmers are feeling the pain of tariffs but has done nothing to stand up for them: “North Carolina farmers are one crop away from bankruptcy.”
And Tillis is standing by and doing nothing while:
- Job losses by the thousands: The WARN Notice Summary for 2025 has listed nearly 2,500 jobs that have been lost in North Carolina, including at UPS, Walmart, Panera, IBM, and Durham’s Research Triangle Institute International.
- Tariffs driving up prices for farmers and consumers: Tariffs imposed by the Trump administration have led to higher prices on everyday goods and are squeezing farmers and family budgets.
