After quite literally getting bullied out of running for governor, Mike Lawler decided he’d rather lose a congressional race next year.
“Mike Lawler’s own constituents hate him, — and not just the one he pays who reportedly cosplayed as a hater — but apparently his thing for being publicly degraded isn’t as strong as his fear of disappointing Trump,” said American Bridge 21st Century spokesperson Monica Venzke. “New Yorkers know Mike Lawler has failed them on the things they care about — SALT, Social Security, food assistance, and Medicaid. They know they can’t count on him to stand up against Trump, not even to run for governor without his blessing. He’s a coward and a fraud, and it’s why the people of New York’s 17th congressional district will make sure he has something to lose next November.”
As a reminder, here’s the truth about Mike Lawler:
- He voted to cut Medicaid for New Yorkers, after repeatedly promising he’d never do that.
- He caved to Trump on cutting the SALT deduction and tried to tout it at a win.
- He allegedly had a staffer intentionally encourage others to cause a scene during his town hall.
- He applauded the overturning of Roe v. Wade, and said he agrees with Donald Trump that abortion rights should be up to the states, then later voted for a bill that sought to have the federal government regulate abortion policy.
- He said that he “believes that the right to abortion should be reserved to a tiny subset of American women.”
- He spoke at a local anti-abortion group’s gala.
- He wore blackface.
- He has accepted donations from conspiracy theorists and bigots, including someone who praised Hitler and a billionaire whose firm lost billions of dollars due to his sexist and inappropriate professional conduct.
- He got himself banned from Wikipedia.
