Over and over, and over again, Donald Trump promised that if elected, he and congressional Republicans would never touch the Medicaid, Medicare, or Social Security programs that the most vulnerable Americans rely on.
Today, Trump broke his promises to the American people and signed a bill that is one big betrayal of the working class.
According to the Yale Budget Lab, the Republican spending bill puts an average of $14,000 in the bank accounts of the richest Americans each year while costing the poorest Americans an average of $700 annually.
The lopsided benefits reflect the priorities of Trump and Republicans to prioritize massive tax cuts for billionaires and rich corporations, while cutting over one trillion dollars from the health care and food assistance programs Americans rely on.
According to the Congressional Budget Office, nearly 12 million Americans will lose their health care coverage due to the Republican agenda. In total, when all of the Republican changes to health care policy are realized, the number of Americans without health insurance is expected to increase to about 17 million.
Due primarily to the massive tax cuts for the richest people in the country, the bill adds $3.8 trillion to the national deficit over the next decade.
“Today is the biggest rollback of health insurance we’ve ever seen in this country, and Donald Trump is celebrating at the White House. Trump promised the American people he’d protect their futures by never touching Social Security, Medicare, and Medicaid, lowering costs, and investing in their kids. Instead, he’s signed a bill into law that amounts to a betrayal of those major promises,” said American Bridge 21st Century spokesperson Brandon Weathersby. “Americans are already struggling with rising prices in the Trump economy. They’re spending less and finding it harder to find work. The agenda signed into law means people will die after they’re priced out of health care, children will go hungry when they’re kicked off food assistance, and lower-income families will fall further behind. Today, Donald Trump cemented his legacy as the destroyer of the middle class.”
