Lugar on Food Stamps & Obesity
In this clip, Richard Lugar muses on the costs and benefits of the country’s food stamp program.
“This is a whole area that verges into disputes about health care in the United States,” Lugar says. “Obesity for people of all ages simply leads to increased health costs and so forth. This is well beyond our ability to deal with in the farm program, and some would say it’s a matter of human choice. If you want to be obese, you’re obese.”

George Allen on the Ryan Plan
In this clip, former Senator George Allen discusses Congressman Paul Ryan’s plan to revamp Medicare by replacing it with a voucher program.
Allen says the Ryan plan is a “thoughtful proposal,” particularly in terms of how it would remodel the tax code and turn Medicaid into a block grant program to the states, but Allen thinks “we should do much better than that.”

Jim Jordan Proposes “Health Scholarships”
In this clip, Jim Jordan suggests replacing Medicare for younger Americans with a phased-in “health scholarship” program.
“This is a model that’s consistent with American principles because it empowers the individual,” Jordan explains. “Here is your health scholarship. You use those dollars — and you’ll probably have to do a means test approach to it — you use those dollars to help you figure out… which healthcare plan meets your needs.”

Bachmann: We Can Legislate Away Anchor Babies
In this clip, Michele Bachmann claims that it’s possible to prevent undocumented immigrants from having children in the U.S., but she doesn’t explain how.
“It is entirely possible through legislation to stop the anchor baby problem,” she says. “There are hospitals in Southern California that have gone out of businesses because they’re bankrupt, they’re bankrupted by anchor babies.”

Hatch: Ben Nelson is the Senate’s Only Moderate Democrat
In this clip, Senator Orrin Hatch (R-Utah) tells the audience at the Western Republican Leadership Conference that his colleague Ben Nelson of Nebraska is the only moderate Democrat in the Senate.
“Ben is a moderate,” he says. “But you saw what he did on ObamaCare. He became the 60th vote that caused the passage of ObamaCare. But he is a moderate. The others are moderates only when their votes aren’t needed by the Democrats… or when it is a parochial issue in their state. Otherwise, they are with them on all spending issues. That’s how they keep themselves in power and we are so doggone dumb in this country that we think they are actually doing something for us when they are really throwing a wet blanket over the whole economy.”
