BuzzFeed: Marco Rubio Spent Big To Research Himself

On February 2, 2012, BuzzFeed reported:

Marco Rubio isn’t running for anything right now, but that didn’t stop him from spending more than $20,000 on a top national research firm to check out his own vulnerabilities.

[...]

“…Now press are digging into things like his family history and his student loans, while liberal Super PACs like American Bridge are doing oppo dumps. So of course we have to do our homework so we can the record straight,” said the aide. “The fact that you have sources combing through our FEC report within hours of it being posted says all you need to say about why we are doing our own research.”

And indeed: The spending was brought to BuzzFeed’s attention by American Bridge, a Democratic opposition research group.

Miami Herald: The Boomerang Effect: R’s Who Attack Newt Gingrich For Rivera Support Impugn Marco Rubio

On January 14, 2012, the Miami Herald reported:

Yesterday, after Miami Rep. David Rivera made it official that he supported Republican candidate Newt Gingrich, the anonymous conservative whisper campaign began. They pointed out that Rivera, the only one of the three Republican representatives from Miami not to endorse Mitt Romney, had been dogged by state and federal investigations owing to investigative reports in The Miami Herald.

[...]

Real Clear Politics: As Potential VP Candidate, Rubio Draws Scrutiny, Attacks

On November 4, 2011, Real Clear Politics reported:

American Bridge, a well-funded Democratic organization “committed to holding Republicans accountable for their words and actions,” is making hay out of The Post’s story. It put together a Web video detailing Rubio’s misstatements, as well as a memo asserting that he had 20 opportunities to correct the record, but didn’t do so. Rodell Mollineau, who leads the organization, told CNN last week that the group posted the video with the 2012 presidential election in mind even though Rubio repeatedly says he doesn’t want a spot on the ticket.
